Mentorship used to play an essential role in Kodava society when it came to young men being introduced or initiated into various social roles. Even today, on many occasions the role of a mentor is relevant, like this round of pariyakali where a young man is being initiated into the nuances of mock-combat by an older and far more experienced opponent. It is clear that this bout is in good spirits rather than a real engagement, with the watching takkas shouting out helpful advice in the spirit of the moment, while the young man takes several sharp strikes from the whip-like cane with good humour and sportsmanship.
